Tanzania is home to Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak, and Mount Meru, a popular alternative for trekking. The most popular Kilimanjaro routes include Machame (the "Whiskey Route"), Lemosho (scenic and less crowded), Marangu (the "Coca-Cola Route"), Rongai (approaching from the north), Northern Circuit (the longest and most scenic route), and Umbwe (the steepest and most challenging). Mount Meru offers a shorter yet scenic and rewarding climb.
The best time for trekking in Tanzania is during the dry seasons:
- January to mid-March: Warm weather and clear skies make for a comfortable climb.
- June to October: Cooler conditions with excellent visibility and fewer rain disruptions.
Avoid the heavy rains in April, May, and November, as trails can become slippery and more challenging.
Trekking in Tanzania requires moderate to high fitness levels, depending on the chosen route. For Mount Kilimanjaro, preparation with cardiovascular training, strength-building, and hiking practice is essential. Mount Meru is less demanding but still requires good stamina and acclimatization due to high altitudes. Proper preparation significantly increases your chances of a successful summit.
Most trekking packages are all-inclusive and typically include:
- Professional guides, porters, and cooks
- Park fees and camping or hut accommodations
- Meals and drinking water during the trek
- Emergency medical equipment (e.g., oxygen tanks and first aid kits)
- Transfers to and from the trekking base
Personal items, gear rental, and tips for staff are usually not included.
Essential items include:
- Warm clothing for cold summit nights and layers for varying conditions
- Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots and trekking poles
- Sleeping bag rated for sub-zero temperatures
- Headlamp with spare batteries
- Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat
- Personal toiletries, medications, and snacks
Your trekking operator will often provide a detailed packing list tailored to your chosen route.
