5 DAY NGORONGORO HIGHLAND TREKKING
Discover the hidden beauty of Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Highlands, a breathtaking region beyond the iconic Ngorongoro Crater. Managed by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, this area is rich in both history and natural wonders, featuring Olduvai Gorge, dormant and active volcanoes, and the awe-inspiring Ol Doinyo Lengai Crater, which last erupted in 2007 and 2008. Ideal for long-range trekking, the highlands showcase a diverse landscape of rolling hills, volcanic peaks, and vibrant crater lakes like Empakai, home to flocks of flamingos. Highlights include visits to Naiyobi Maasai Village, Lerai Forest Camp, and the iconic Lake Natron, set against a dramatic volcanic background. Led by skilled walking guides, park rangers, and Maasai warriors, this adventure ensures both safety and an authentic cultural experience. Donkeys carry your supplies, and each night you’ll camp under the stars, fully immersed in the remarkable landscapes of the Ngorongoro Highlands.
5 DAY NGORONGORO HIGHLAND TREKKING ITINERARY
Day 0
Arrival (Pre-trek Briefing)
We recommend all trekkers to organize their own flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airpot. Then If you have opted for the optional airport transfers, we will pick you up from Kilimanjaro Airport or Arusha airport and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
Arrive at least a day before your trek to attend a pre-trek briefing at your hotel. We will review your gear and provide any necessary equipment rentals

Day 1
Arusha to Olmoti Crater to Empakai
An early start to get to Olmoti from where you will continue on your way heading to Empakai Crater and hike into Empakai Crater with an armed ranger. There are no roads and no human inhabitants in the crater, which contains forests and a deep lake where flocks of flamingos can be spotted. The caldera is 6 km wide, and the lake occupies nearly half of its floor. The scenery is spectacular at every point. From the northern and eastern sides, you can look out to the dramatic cone of Oldonyo Lengai, the Great Rift Valley, and Lake Natron. On the valley’s eastern side, you might see the snowcapped peak of kilimanjaro

Day 2
Empakai to Rift Valley
After breakfast around 8:30 AM, you’ll begin your hike from Empakai Crater toward the edge of the Rift Valley Escarpment, with donkeys assisting in carrying camp equipment. We’ll set up camp at a stunning vantage point overlooking the Rift Valley and the majestic cone of Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano.

Day 3
Rift Valley to Lake Natron
In the morning, begin your trek into the stunning Rift Valley, reaching the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai mountain. As you hike, you’ll be surrounded by dramatic landscapes: steep cliffs on one side, serene Lake Natron in front, and the awe-inspiring stratovolcano, Lengai, on the other. Descend into the valley and unwind at a comfortable campsite close to Lake Natron.

Day 4
Lake Natron Full Day Tour
Today you will experience an unforgettable day tour of Lake Natron, where you’ll explore the stunning Engaresero River Gorge and its enchanting waterfalls, witness the vibrant breeding flamingos at the soda lake, and marvel at the dramatic rift cliffs that define the landscape. For the adventurous, an optional night climb of Mount Oldoinyo Lengai awaits, offering a thrilling experience under the stars—just remember to bring your water shoes and swimsuits for a refreshing dip after your ascent!

The best time to visit the Ngorongoro Highlands for trekking is during the dry season, which runs from June to October. This period offers favorable weather conditions with less rain, making trails more accessible and wildlife viewing more rewarding. Additionally, the temperatures are mild, ideal for hiking. The wet season from November to May can bring lush landscapes but may also lead to muddy trails and less predictable weather.
